DIY inspiration - Givenchy FW11 organza skirt

Givenchy had organza hemmed skirts in their FW2011 collection. I see them as an idea to use for making a short skirt long again. Second hand shop have loads of short skirts that personally I won´t wear anymore. I´m more of an pencil skirt girl and at the tender age of 35 feeling comfortable is really important for me. The organza panel (sewn to the lining hem) would solve a lot of issues. Must try.

Designer - Laura Vartio nail jewelry

The title of this post might me a bit misleading. I´m not talking about manicures, but actual accessories made from metal nails. Finnish designer Laura Vartio creates and makes jewelry with a Ann Demeulemeesterish punk aesthetic. They are made from chain, nails and leather. Her nail crown is my favorite.

James Long for Topman

"Royal College of Art graduate, James Long, has built his name and reputation doing what all our favorite British designers do best: mixing new ideas with the traditional. Designer of eponymous label, his trademark look is strong, bold, directional menswear, with innovative knits and reworked leather. The latest to be selected by Topshop to share his vision with the mainstream, his Topman capsule collection, seen here, has recently hit the streets. Inspired by Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain and The Sex Pistols, Long has updated classic jumpers with new textures and cool color ways. We can’t think of a more suited designer for the coveted Topshop collab: the perfect mix of boundary pushing with commerciality."
Amanda Jakubik, via Trendland.

I say shop real 80´s intarsia and mohair knits at second hand stores. They are super trendy right now (who would have thought?!) and one of a kind, as it should be as this Cobain-look is based on uniqueness and flannel shirt styling.

Finnish Independence Day Trashion

Thursday December 6th in the Finnish Independence Day. This year is super special for me as one of my trashion dresses will be appearing in the annual President's Ball. What is it? Every year 2,5 million Finns gather around to watch this 4 hour spectacle on TV (Finland has only a total 5,4 million citizens.. so it is BIG for us). It´s like the Oscars for us Finnish fashion folk as everyones eyes are on the dresses and who is wearing who. This is one of my life goals as a fashion designer and it is finally coming true.

I have the privilege to dress one of Finland´s finest actresses, Laura Birn for the ball. She is best known for her roles in The Purge (Puhdistus, 2012) and Promise (Lupaus, 2005). She was recently nominated for 2012 Satellite Awards on her role in the Purge which is also Finland´s official nominee for the Oscars, directed by Antti Jokinen. Laura is competing for the prize with six other actresses, including Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Emilie Dequenne (Our Children), Keira Knightley (Anna Karenina), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Laura Linney (Hyde Park on Hudson) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty). The Purge is a book by author Sofi Oksanen and it is a Finnish best seller that has been translated to over 40 languages.

The trashion dress that I´m making for her is done with my favorite technique, from second hand leather jackets. I´m hoping people will first look at the dress and then be surprised to find out what it is made of. The best part is that this same technique is also presented in my Trashion-book so anyone is able to make it themselves at home! You´ll find the instructions there. I´m also quite sure this will be the first all-leather dress that ever danced in the Precident´s Ball. My good friend Jenni Ahtiainen (gTie) is making her accessories, so keep an eye out for them as well. You have to watch the show to see the dress, but I promise to post more studio images of the dress when we have time to take them with Mikko.

You can watch the reception live at Yle TV1 (18.50 - 22.15). The program should be able to be viewed from abroad as well or you can watch it online at YLE Areena. The reception will be commented by Piia Pasanen and Jussi-Pekka Rantanen, and the fashion commentary will be by Jaakko Selin.

Laura, thank you. You made a dream come true for me.
And you looked amazing.
Many others seemed to think so also.

If you want a similar dress for yourself, you´ll find the instructions to this leather technique in my Trashion-book

Louis Vuitton SS 2011 fringe earrings

EDIT.
I´ll repost this tutorial from two years back since fringes are still big and we all need something for the festive season. Enjoy!
-------------------------------------------------------

Louis Vuitton had loong black fringe earrings on the models in their SS2011 collection runway show. To make them you´ll need fringe ribbon, scissors, tape, sewing thread, needle and a pair of earring posts and backs.

1. Cut the fringe. Use tape to secure the ends.
2. Fold the fringe ribbon ends to the middle and push the earring back pin through the ribbon layers.
3. Sew fold together by hand. FINISHED!

I gave this Trashion cardigan to my friend Stella for her birthday so she would make it through the cold winter. She tried to steal it from me when we were shooting the book back in June so I just figured she must have it.

You´ll find the instructions to make this in my Trashion book.

Vietto, one of Finlands eco fashion success stories did their version of the FW11 Givenchy zipper jacket. Very versatile piece to style. This one is made from customizing Finnish army winter jackets. Works well in an punk setting or as a modern simple piece. This amazing image was taken for a local fashion magazine called REVS. This is just one of the many examples of how good and stylish eco fashion can look.

About a leather top

$

Since the Trashion book is done, I´ve been playing around in my head on what I should start to do now. Maybe start making new products, a line perhaps? Do more tutorials (I dont have a good camera)? Just create things for myself for now as the book was petty much for other people? So many questions.

The thing thst I do know is that I´m in love with tops and t-shirts made from leather. Like this one from a'bout. The designers Dean Hutchinson and Yunchieh Chang see it like this: "About Design Corp is about nothing. It's the idea that nothing is defined. Identity is what you create, not what is given to you." For that reason, the clothes created at About don't have any labels. "Except for a few for shipping purposes and that sort of thing," Hutchison notes. "But even then, they're just attached by a loose thread. It's meant to be clipped."

Brilliant.

I want a similar leather top for many reasons: The material will last forever. I don´t have to wash it if I just wear a top underneath it. It will be spill-proof. Looks artsy and rad at the same time. Easy to style in various ways. And so on, and so on. What more can you ask from a garment? H&M had one fake leather tee in their collections a couple of seasons back. I was fortunate enough find one second hand and it has quickly become one of my favorite pieces to wear.

Should this be a new "product" for me? Ecologically made, trashion leather t-shirt?

Doilies will never go out of style

Yeah.. I knew it. Dresses and skirts made from doilies and crocheted table cloths and bed wear will never go out of style. They are classics and easy to sew. I have the tutorial in my Trashion book how you can incorporate them to your old dresses and skirts. Personally I need a maxi skirt version of this for next summer.
